Quick answer: A Sedgwick County mechanics lien is a lien statement filed with the Civil department of the 18th Judicial District Court on the 11th floor of the Sedgwick County Courthouse, 525 N. Main Street, Wichita. The courthouse is open until 5, but Civil closes at 4 p.m. Subs and suppliers have 3 months and GCs 4. See the full Kansas deadlines and statutes.
Where Sedgwick County liens are filed
Sedgwick County is the 18th Judicial District. Lien statements go to its Civil department on the 11th floor of the Sedgwick County Courthouse, 525 N. Main Street, Wichita. The Civil department is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, an hour shorter than the courthouse itself, and it closes on federal holidays.
The 18th District tracks these filings under their own case codes: ML for a mechanic’s lien, SR for a subcontractor’s lien, and OG for an oil and gas mechanic’s lien. The court has made e-filing mandatory for all civil cases, with a login issued by the Office of Judicial Administration. We file with the Civil department well before the 4 p.m. close.
The Register of Deeds and the legal description
The Sedgwick County Register of Deeds is a separate office in the Ruffin Building, 100 N. Broadway, Suite 105, with a satellite office in Haysville. It isn’t where the lien goes, and its own FAQ warns that liens are filed in several offices. It is where we get the deed.
The Register of Deeds requires a Sedgwick County legal description under K.S.A. 58-2221, and its online document search covers deeds recorded since January 1, 1969. We pull the vesting deed there for the owner of record and the legal description before drafting the lien statement.
Where we file across Sedgwick County
Sedgwick County has 17 cities: Andale, Bel Aire, Bentley, Cheney, Clearwater, Colwich, Derby, Garden Plain, Goddard, Haysville, Kechi, Maize, Mulvane, Park City, Sedgwick, Valley Center and Wichita. Every one of them, and the unincorporated county, files with the same district court in Wichita.
Sedgwick County work runs from aviation and manufacturing plants to downtown Wichita renovations and subdivisions in Derby, Maize and Bel Aire. On the public side, the county is building the $96.5 million, 104-bed South Central Regional Psychiatric Hospital at MacArthur and Meridian, with move-in planned for late 2026, and broke ground October 20, 2025 on the $20 million COMCARE Community Crisis Center at 235 S. Topeka, with Icon Structures as contractor. Public projects in Kansas run on bonds, not liens.
What sinks liens in Sedgwick County
- Arriving at 4:15. The courthouse is open until 5, but the Civil department closes at 4 p.m.
- Filing at the Register of Deeds. The Ruffin Building records deeds. Lien statements go to the district court.
- A legal description that isn’t Sedgwick County’s. The Register of Deeds requires one under K.S.A. 58-2221, and so does a valid lien.
- Missing the Notice of Extension window. On commercial jobs, the extension has to be filed and mailed within the original 3 or 4 months.
- No Notice of Intent to Perform on a new home. Subs and suppliers on new residential property file it before the deed to the buyer records. See the Kansas deadline table.
How LevelSet handles a Sedgwick County lien
- Intake. Send us the job address, the company that hired you, your invoices, your last day of work or delivery and whether it’s a new home.
- Statutory form. We pull the deed and legal description from the Register of Deeds and prepare the Kansas lien statement with an itemized, verified account.
- Notarization. Matt Rush, as the claimant’s agent, verifies and signs the statement in front of a notary.
- Recording. We file it with the 18th Judicial District Court’s Civil department before the 4 p.m. close.
- Service. The owner is served with a copy of the lien statement, and the general contractor gets one too.
Example: a Sedgwick County deadline walk-through
Example: An HVAC subcontractor’s last day on a Derby retail building is September 22. Its lien statement is due with the 18th Judicial District Court by December 22 (3 months). Because it’s a commercial job, filing and mailing a Notice of Extension by December 22 pushes the deadline to February 22 (5 months).
